Our Story

Established in December 2006, Brunel Brass emerged from the vision of tutors and seasoned members of the esteemed Great Western Youth Band. Born as an adult ensemble, it was destined to grace concerts and challenge the brass banding world, offering a pathway for budding talents to advance their musical journeys. Nestled in Swindon, Wiltshire, Brunel Brass was initiated under the guidance of its founding Musical Director, the illustrious John Winterflood ARCM LGSM.

Under John's stewardship, alongside dedicated tutors and volunteers, Brunel Brass burgeoned into a pinnacle of musical excellence in the Wiltshire region. John's retirement in December 2016 marked the end of an era, as he bid adieu to pursue sunny horizons in Spain.

From its inaugural performance at the West of England Regional Championships in 2007, where it clinched a remarkable 5th place after just ten rehearsals, Brunel Brass has surged through the ranks. With four Area Championships and two National Championships to its name, alongside numerous victories in esteemed contests like WEBBA, ODBBA, and GBBA, its prowess is undisputed.

Transitioning from one maestro to another, the baton was passed to Paul Collis-Smith until July 2018, when Daniel Hall assumed the role of Musical Director. Under Daniel's leadership, the band has achieved remarkable success, securing 10 placements within the top six and claiming four first-place victories at contests both locally and nationally. Additionally, the band ascended to the championship division, earning qualification to the national finals and achieving its highest-ever result in the championship section. Furthermore, in 2023, the band received the prestigious honour of being ranked among the top 50 brass bands worldwide (Brass Stats, December 2023). In November 2024, the band qualified for a place in the British Open Spring Festival for the first time in its short history, capping a remarkable first two decades for the band.

Throughout its journey, Brunel Brass has remained a harmonious blend of youthful vigour and seasoned expertise, a testament to its enduring legacy since inception.
