About Brunel Brass

Brunel Brass was established in December 2006 when the tutors and older members of the newly formed Great Western Youth Band decided to create an adult band that could perform at concerts and compete against other brass bands, providing a route for promising young players to continue their Banding careers. Brunel Brass is based in Swindon, Wiltshire and practices weekly on a Thursday evening.

The founding Musical Director was the vastly experienced John Winterflood ARCM LGSM. John has always been a champion of youth music-making and was the driving force for the whole organisation, which comprises of two youth bands and Brunel Brass. Working with committed tutors and volunteer helpers the three bands have become one of the premier music organisations in the Wiltshire area. John retired from the organisation in December 2016 and moved to Spain to enjoy the sunshine.

The first public performance for the band was at the West of England Regional Championships in 2007. Playing in the 4th Section, and after only 10 rehearsals, the band were placed 5th overall. This early success was soon to be repeated as the band moved through the sections and, in its 13 year history, the band has become Area Champions on four occasions and National Champions twice. The band has also enjoyed success at local competitions, winning at WEBBA, ODBBA & GBBA contests five times since 2007.

Following John’s retirement the band was led by Paul Collis-Smith until July 2018. The current Musical Director is Daniel Hall.

Brunel Brass is a mix of talented young players and experienced and talented adults which has been the hallmark of the band since its formation.
